Menopause, Fear, and the Conversation We Need to Have About Hormone Replacement Therapy

ree

One of the most important conversations I bring into every class I teach is about menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Not because I want to push anyone toward a certain choice, but because the way we’ve been taught to fear HRT has silenced too many women and left them without the knowledge they deserve.

For decades, hormone replacement therapy has been surrounded by fearmongering. Much of this fear can be traced back to early studies — particularly the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in the early 2000s — that linked HRT to increased health risks. The problem? Those studies were deeply flawed. They used older women well past the average age of menopause, many of whom already had underlying health conditions. The results were generalized, misinterpreted, and repeated endlessly in the media. What was left out was context: that the risks were not universal, and for many women, the benefits of HRT far outweigh the risks.

Unfortunately, the damage was done. Fear took root. Women stopped HRT overnight. Doctors became hesitant to prescribe it. And a generation of women went without support during one of the most significant transitions of their lives.

This is why I bring it up every time I teach. Not to tell anyone what to do, but to open the door to real conversation. Every woman deserves the opportunity to make a decision about her health based on knowledge, not fear.

When we strip away the scare tactics and misinformation, HRT becomes one of many valid options. For some, it’s life-changing. For others, it may not be the right path. Both are perfectly okay — as long as the choice is informed, personal, and respected.

What matters most is this: you are not powerless in menopause. You don’t have to accept silence, shame, or suffering as the default. Education is empowerment. And whether you choose HRT, lifestyle shifts, or alternative supports, you deserve to know the truth behind the fear.

So the next time we sit in a class together, know that this conversation is coming up — because it’s that important. And because every single woman deserves to stand in her power, free from fear, with all the knowledge she needs to make the decision that’s right for her.
