Let’s Talk About Irregular Periods

I remember doing PAP exams for some ladies. I would ask them a series of questions, including, are your periods regular. When some would inform me of irregular bleeding, the answer I hear most often was "thats normal.". I wasn't satisfied with that answer. I decided I wanted to learn more about women's health so I could be a better advocate when working in the clinics.

So if your periods have been irregular you are certainly not alone. I was surprised actually how many women had irregular cycles!

It can be very confusing or unsettling for sure, but here is the thing. Our bodies talk to us in a variety of ways.

Let’s walk through this together — heart to heart — and talk about what can cause irregular periods and when it might be time to reach out for help.

First Things First: What Is an “Irregular” Period Anyway?

Most cycles are about 21 to 35 days long, but it’s completely normal for that number to shift a little from month to month. So If 35 is consistent for you, thats your normal!

We start calling it “irregular” when:

  • Your periods are coming way sooner or later than expected

  • You skip a month (or a few) without a clear reason

  • Your flow suddenly changes — way heavier or way lighter than usual

  • Your bleeding lasts a lot longer (or shorter) than normal

  • Things just feel…off

It doesn’t mean anything is “wrong” right away — it’s just a signal. And signals deserve a little love and attention.

Some Gentle Reasons Your Period Might Be Acting Up

Here are a few common reasons periods sometimes lose their rhythm:

1.

Stress (Yes, It’s That Powerful)

Cortisol (the tress hormone) can derail your cycle. Weather a big event has happened in your life (pleasant or the latter) or you've been burning the candle at both ends, Stress can be the culprit.

2.

Hormone Changes

Conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or thyroid issues can make your hormones dance to a different beat.

(And sometimes it’s just temporary shifts — but it’s good to keep an eye out.)

3.

Big Shifts in Weight or Exercise

If you’ve lost or gained weight quickly, or started (or stopped) exercising intensely, your hormones notice.

Our bodies love balance — not too little, not too much.

4.

Birth Control Adjustments

Starting or stopping hormonal birth control (like the pill, patch, or IUD) can throw your cycles a little off-kilter while your body adjusts.

5.

The Beautiful (and Bumpy) Road of Perimenopause

If you’re in your late 30s or 40s, your body may start doing a slow, graceful dance toward menopause.

Fluctuating estrogen levels can make periods unpredictable — and that’s completely natural.

6.

Other Health Things

Sometimes irregular periods are linked to things like endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic infections.

If something feels off in your gut (literally or emotionally), it’s worth checking in with your doctor.

7.

Eating Disorders or Nutrient Deficiencies

Periods need energy and nourishment. If you’re struggling with eating patterns or missing key nutrients, your body may pause your cycle to protect you.

8.

Breastfeeding Magic

If you’re nursing a little one, high levels of prolactin can delay your periods for months (and that’s totally okay!).

When You Should Check In With Your Doctor

You know your body better than anyone.

But here are a few signs that it’s smart to reach out for some extra support:

  • You’ve missed three or more periods in a row

  • Your periods suddenly become super painful or super heavy

  • You’re spotting between periods regularly

  • You have other new symptoms like big shifts in weight, hair growth, or skin changes

  • You’re just feeling worried or unsure

There is no shame in getting help. Being curious about your health is a superpower.
